In a medium saucepan, bring the Dr. Pepper to a boil. Pour over the oats. Let cool. Cream together the shortening (or margarine) and sugar. Add eggs and beat until mixture is fluffy. Sift together brown sugar, flour, salt, soda and cinnamon and add to the creamed mixture. Stir in Dr. Pepper mixture and vanilla. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13 x 2-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes or until done. Remove from oven and spread topping over cake.
